Principal's Message

From Mrs. Arredondo Lomeli

As one of the founders of San Fernando Institute for Applied Media, this is more than just a school to me, it represents a dream in action. A dream to have a quality, neighborhood school that students can walk to. A dream to have a staff so dedicated to the needs of students that they continue to push the boundaries of learning to ensure our students reach new heights. A dream to empower a community to be advocates for the changes they need. SFiAM is a dream that continues to evolve, continues to grow stronger, and continues to reach new dimensions.

We are kicking off our 2018-2019 school year as an official STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) certified school. We have been working hard to align our programs and project-based curriculum. Our focus on embedding 21st century skills of Communication, Critical-thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, and the use of technology-into all subject areas naturally led us in the STEAM direction. We also opened our Maker Space two years ago with a focus on robotics, engineering and construction, and digital film making. Our MakerSpace is now LAUSD’s Advanced Prototype Site. This means other schools are coming to us to see how to do it successfully. We are extremely proud of our students and staff for breaking out of the traditional and truly becoming innovators of the future.

Another great program is our Linked Learning Business courses. We have joined JV Enterprises to help our students learn how to become entrepreneurs. They learn how to build a business and launch a product from the ground up. By utilizing our MakerSpace, they also build prototypes of their product. This culminates with a Trade Show at the Pasadena Convention Center where they have to set up their own booth and sell their product. This type of real-world experience is what will give SFiAM students an advantage in high school and college.

Our partnership with Youth Policy Institute helps to bring additional programs to the students and families of SFiAM. For example, GEAR UP is back for our 7th and 8th graders. GEAR UP, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a federally funded program that works to provide opportunities for students to not only learn about, but to get support with meeting the requirements of high school graduation and college entrance. They provide everything from tutoring and mentoring programs, college field trips, parent workshops, and resources that will help families gain access to college.

Our Extended Learning Program (EXL) allows for enrichment and learning to continue after school. We have enrichment programs in sports, dance, cooking, STEAM, and photography. Students have an opportunity to explore their interests, learn new things, and have fun with friends in a constructive and meaningful way.

San Fernando Institute for Applied Media continuously strives to bring the absolute best to our students, families, staff, and community. We pride ourselves in our dedication and willingness to always put students at the forefront of every decision. We welcome you to our Jaguar family and we look forward to creating opportunity and change with you!
